FAQ
Editor
Is Plumelin only a text editor?
No. The editor is at the centre of the product, but Plumelin also connects the outline, fictional world, feedback and exports within the same project.
Which languages can I write in?
In any language you choose: the manuscript belongs to you from beginning to end. The Plumelin interface is available in French and English.
Offline use
Can I work offline?
Yes. The project lives on your device first, so writing does not depend on the network. Synchronisation then lets you find the project elsewhere or collaborate.
Which devices does Plumelin work on?
Plumelin runs in the browser on computers, tablets and phones without installation. When you use an account, your projects synchronise across your devices.
Can synchronisation lose my work?
Changes made on several devices are merged without overwriting text, even after a long time offline. The synchronised project includes version history.
Import
Can I import an existing manuscript?
Yes. Import covers common formats: DOCX, EPUB, PDF, RTF, Markdown, plain text, HTML, Fountain, FDX and zipped Scrivener projects.
Does import preserve the manuscript structure?
The manuscript is divided into chapters and scenes from its structure, and text formatting is preserved: italics, bold and headings. Final page layout is rebuilt at export time.
AI and data
Do I need to use AI to work in Plumelin?
No. No feature requires AI. It is optional during import: it can suggest initial world elements from the text, or remain disabled.
Is my text sent to an AI service?
Never without your action. Text is sent to an AI service only when you import a document with that option, and no data is stored; your manuscript remains yours.
Is my writing used to train AI models?
No. Azure AI Foundry processes the excerpts needed for analysis without using them to train models. Plumelin keeps no cache of the analysis.
Export
Are exports ready to send?
The Free plan covers simple exports. Paid plans add more demanding formats: DOCX, EPUB, cover and polished PDF.
Can I take my writing and leave?
Yes, at any time. Your projects export to several formats, including PDF, EPUB, DOCX and ZIP. Some are available on the Free plan. Plumelin is designed to remain useful, not to hold your manuscripts hostage.
Pricing
Do I have to pay to get started?
No. The Free plan lets you write a complete book and synchronise it with your account: outline, scenes, worldbuilding and simple exports. Paid plans add advanced exports, suggestions and collaboration.
What happens to my projects if I stop paying?
The account returns to the Free plan. Writing, synchronisation and history remain available; advanced exports and suggestion mode pause. You should still keep regular backup exports of your manuscript.
Ownership
Who owns the text?
The author owns the text. Plumelin helps write, organise, review and export the project; it does not claim the manuscript content.
Who can read my writing?
No one unless you invite them. Projects are private by default; only invited people can access them, with the permissions you give them.
Where is my writing stored?
The project is saved on your device so you can continue writing offline. When you use an account, a synchronised copy is also kept on Plumelin servers so you can access the project on your other devices.
Collaboration
Can I work with readers or editors?
Yes. The project owner activates Studio, then invites each person with the appropriate role: read-only, commenting or writing.
Who needs the Studio plan?
Only the owner of the project they want to share. Invited readers, editors and co-authors participate with a Free or Author account, without a Studio subscription.
Publishers and competitions
What does Plumelin offer publishers, competitions and imprints?
A shared framework: export templates aligned with your guidelines, cleaner and more consistent submissions, and organised feedback. The Publishers page page explains these workflows.
How much does it cost an organisation?
This offer is being prepared with the first organisations. Email us with your formats and schedule so we can assess a suitable framework.
Do authors have to pay to respond to a call for submissions?
No. Each author writes with their own Plumelin account, which is free to start; some features require a paid plan, detailed on the Pricing page. The organisation is not charged.
Can an organisation read an author’s project?
Yes, if the project owner invites the organisation and has a Studio plan. Without an invitation, the organisation receives only what the author chooses to send: the exported manuscript and, if they wish, contextual material.
